Phwedo to return to court in October

Renowned actor Tumpe Nigel Mtaya, also known as Phwedo, was set to appear in court today, but his case has been adjourned to October 16, 2025.

The adjournment comes after the court previously ruled that the State must commence prosecution or risk having the case discharged.

According to Dzikondianthu Malunda, Director of Criminal Litigation, several developments led to the adjournment, including the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions taking over the case.

The assigned prosecutors are currently attending a refresher course in Blantyre.

Phwedo’s lawyer, Khwima Mchizi, agreed to the adjournment, which was reduced from 60 days to 30 days.

Phwedo, a celebrated actor known for his role in the popular film “School Days,” faces defilement charges involving a 15-year-old girl.

The case has garnered significant public attention, with many calling for justice to be served.
