Environmental expert lauds MCPs green vision

Environmental policy expert, Mathews Málata hailed Malawi Congress Party (MCP)s 2025—2030 manifesto on creating over 500,000 green jobs in sectors such as renewable energy, organic farming and waste recycling, among others.

Malata described the MCP manifesto as the best way to go, saying this is a clear blueprint for Malawis drive towards sustainable environmental management.

The environmental expert made the remarks following unveiling of MCPs manifesto by President, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on July 19, as the manifesto outlines goals such as creating over 500,000 green jobs.

“Creation of green jobs across key sectors reflects a growing political commitment to sustainable and inclusive growth,” he added and further commended the MCPs plan to facilitate in planting 100 million trees by 2030, calling it bold and practical.

The manifesto, among others, states that, every household will be encouraged to plant at least 10 trees annually to ensure vegetative cover for resilience to natural disasters.

On agriculture, MCP proposes expanding solar-powered irrigation and promoting drought-tolerant crops, while on education, the manifesto pledges climate literacy in schools and Green Innovation Hubs.

The manifesto also mentions intention to replace charcoal stoves with clean cooking tech apart from extending plastic ban, introducing environmental friendly carrier bags, promoting biodegradable alternatives.

Málata therefore expressed hope that the interventions in the manifesto will surely help to build the countrys climate resilience and improve on food security.

“These efforts show a thoughtful strategy that integrates economic opportunity,” he said and welcomed the implementation of the National Climate Change Investment Plan and a National Carbon Registry.

Malata said the investment plan and the National Carbon Registry also demonstrates good intent in managing carbon resources transparently, observing that a thriving nation demands a thriving environment.

“Environmental protection must be the foundation of economic and social progress,” he environmental expert said.

MCP manifesto unveiling came on July 19 came soon after Malawi Electoral Commission launched campaign period from July 14 to September 14, 2015 as Malawi will hold tripartite election on September 16.
