The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has arrested four individuals accused of conspiring to burn down major markets in Lilongwe in an alleged attempt to disrupt the upcoming September 16, 2025, General Elections.
President Lazarus Chakwera has asked Malawians to vote him again next Tuesday saying the fuel shortages and poor economic status are caused by his enemies. He has since said he will fire some government officials after he wins the elections.

As count down to 16 September general elections with only 16 days remaining political parties continue to seek votes from the voters.
Minister of Transportation, Jacob Hara, has confirmed a major derailment of a cargo train carrying fuel at Kamwendo Railway Station in Machinga District.
The incident, attributed to a wrong directive from a control center in Mozambique, resulted in nine fuel tanks overturning, with four leaking diesel. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported.
A full investigation is underway to determine the exact causes and prevent future occurrences.
