“75 percent of Malawians are POOR”-The World Bank says

Malawi’s poverty levels are concerning, with 75% of the population living on less than $3 (approximately K5,253) per day, according to the World Bank’s latest Poverty and Equity Brief.

The report highlights that the number of poor Malawians has increased by 3.5 million since 2010, reaching around 14 million by 2019.

Key Poverty Indicators:

– _Population below minimum daily caloric intake: 51% (no change since 2010)

– _Projected GDP growth (2025)_1.9% (below population growth rate of 2.6%)

– _Population living below $3/day (2025): estimated 76.6%.

– _Additional people falling into poverty (2025: 417,000 to 482,000.

The World Bank attributes this trend to persistent economic hardships and growing food insecurity.

Malawi’s economic growth has been slow, averaging 2.2% in recent years, far below the recommended 10.6% needed to achieve lower-middle-income status by 2030.
