Beer kills shoe repairer
Christopher Dzimbiri, 38, a well-known shoe repairer at Chintheche Market in Nkhata Bay District, has died after allegedly consuming alcohol on an empty stomach.
In an interview Sunday, Nkhata Bay Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Devoter Mithi, said the incident occurred in the morning of January 4, 2026, at Mfufu Village in the area of Senior Chief Malanda.
Mithi said that Dzimbiri had earlier been advised by medical personnel to stop drinking alcohol due to health complications, but he reportedly ignored the advice.
“On the morning of the incident, Dzimbiri did not report to his usual place of business, prompting friends and relatives to check on him at his house, where they found him lifeless.
“A postmortem examination conducted at Chintheche Rural Hospital revealed that Dzimbiri died from low blood sugar levels following excessive alcohol consumption on an empty stomach,” she said.
Police have since urged the public to take medical advice seriously and drink responsibly.
