Daredevils: Malawi struck by low condom use

Health authorities have expressed alarm regarding the low condom usage among the youth in Malawi, cautioning that this trend is jeopardizing initiatives aimed at reducing the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV and AIDS.

The Ministry of Health reports that despite the distribution of millions of condoms each year, the uptake remains alarmingly low, especially among young individuals who are identified as one of the most vulnerable groups.

During the observance of International Condom Day in Lilongwe, Matthews Chinyama, an advisor on preventive health services at the Ministry of Health, emphasized that condoms are among the most effective means of preventing both STIs and unintended pregnancies.

“It is concerning that as a Ministry, we provide substantial quantities of condoms annually, yet the actual usage remains low,” Chinyama remarked, characterizing the situation as a hindrance in the battle against new HIV infections.

In the meantime, Francis Mabedi, the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Manager at the National AIDS Commission (NAC), indicated that behavioral obstacles continue to impede progress, pointing out that numerous young individuals are not adhering to the recommended prevention strategies.

Officials from the Ministry of Health have reiterated their calls for heightened awareness and responsible sexual practices among the youth to reverse this trend and bolster the nation’s efforts in preventing HIV and STIs.
