Malawi wakes up from sleep over flag misuse in Russia
The government of Malawi has revealed that it has reached out to the International Maritime Organization regarding allegations that vessels carrying sanctioned Russian oil have been masquerading as ships registered under the Malawian flag.
Charles Nkhalamba, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, informed local media that officials will soon formally consult with the global maritime organization to thoroughly address the issue before the international community.
Nkhalamba emphasized that the government is treating this matter with utmost seriousness and is developing long-term measures to prevent the misuse of Malawi’s registry system.
He further stated that this initiative aims to enhance procedures and restore trust in Malawi’s maritime registry. “We are implementing this to make it more difficult for fraudsters to improperly utilize the Malawian flag in the future,” he remarked.
Malawi is reportedly one of 27 nations whose flags have been misappropriated by fraudsters in international shipping activities. In 2025 alone, it is claimed that at least 25 sanctioned vessels transported Russian oil while pretending to be Malawian-flagged ships, raising alarms about reputational risks and possible diplomatic repercussions for the nation.
Officials assert that the engagement with the International Maritime Organization signifies the commencement of a process aimed at clearing Malawi’s reputation and enhancing oversight mechanisms to protect the integrity of its national flag in international waters.
