Sex workers raise fees in Malawi

Commercial sex workers in Malawi have in recent months significantly increased the prices they charge for their services, a development they attribute to the rising cost of living and increasing economic hardships.

Information gathered by Malawi Data News indicates that the cost of a short-time encounter has risen sharply from K5,000 to K15,000, while the price for overnight services has increased from K25,000 to K70,000.

Some sex workers, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the adjustments reflect the increasing prices of basic commodities, accommodation, transport and other daily necessities, which have made it difficult to maintain their livelihoods without raising their charges.

The price hikes have reportedly caught many clients by surprise, with some saying the new rates are beyond their reach.

The Malawi Data Monitoring team also learns that others, however, acknowledged that the broader economic situation has affected virtually every sector of the economy.

For instance, Mangochi is among Malawi’s busiest tourism destinations and has a sizeable commercial sex industry, particularly around lakeshore entertainment centres, where demand for such services tends to increase during weekends and holiday periods.

Malawi Data News was unable to independently verify whether the new prices are being charged uniformly across Mangochi, as rates may vary depending on location and individual service providers.
