”Protect Doctors”-Chithyola tells Government
The Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Simplex Chithyola Banda, has called on the government to enhance the safety and security of medical professionals, cautioning that ongoing delays in addressing their issues could increase the country’s brain drain.
During a speech in Parliament , Chithyola Banda voiced his concerns regarding the fatalities of two doctors from Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre since the previous year.
He highlighted that Malawi is already experiencing a shortage of medical staff, with one doctor reportedly catering to approximately 13,000 patients, and warned that persistent insecurity might compel more healthcare workers to seek safer working and living environments abroad.
Chithyola Banda has thus urged the government to bolster security in urban areas and other high-risk locations to safeguard medical practitioners and all citizens of Malawi.
Dr. Victoria Bobe was tragically shot at her home in Chigumula, Blantyre, in October of last year, while Dr. Atughanile Chomo was killed at her residence in Mount Pleasant, Blantyre, earlier this month.
