Woman cries for jailed abusive husband

There was drama at Balaka Second Grade Magistrate’s Court after a woman walked from the public gallery to beg for mercy for her husband moments after he was sentenced.

Blackson Godfrey, 27, a Kabaza operator, was sentenced to 5 years with hard labour for grievously harming his wife, Catherine George, which led to her losing her left eye.

Balaka Police PRO Gladson M’bumpha said the case was reported to police with help from women’s rights NGO WORLEC.

After Magistrate Peter Nkuzi delivered the sentence, the victim emotionally approached the bench to plead for her husband. The court had already risen.
