Egnat free in sister’s murder case

The High Court in Lilongwe has acquitted Egnat Katengeza in the murder case of her sister, Agnes Katengeza, after ruling that the evidence presented against her was insufficient to require her to enter a defence.

However, the court has found her co-accused, Amos Katengeza, with a case to answer. The court has adjourned the matter for 14 days, after which Amos is expected to inform the court how he intends to conduct his defence.

The two were jointly charged with the murder of their sister on September 23, 2023. Agnes, an employee of the Reserve Bank of Malawi, was found dead in the boot of her vehicle behind Gateway Mall in Lilongwe the following day.

Meanwhile, delivering the ruling today, High Court Judge Bruno Kalemba said the State had presented sufficient evidence against Amos to establish a prima facie case, while the evidence against Egnat amounted to mere suspicion.
