South African tourist still missing in Malawian forest since July

Gerhardus Albertus Janse Van Rensburg, a 72-year-old South African tourist, remains missing in Nyika National Park, Malawi, since July 17, 2025. Despite extensive search efforts involving park rangers, police, drones, and helicopters, no trace has been found.

Van Rensburg disappeared after leaving his vehicle barefoot to seek directions while navigating the park with his wife, Noelien, using Google Maps. The search operation has faced challenges due to the park’s dense terrain, harsh conditions, and high-altitude plateaus.

The family is considering legal steps to declare Van Rensburg dead, citing a “long and painful wait”. Authorities continue to appeal for information and are deploying K9 units to aid in the search
