Man kills granny after advice from a prophet

In Neno district , a 19-year-old man, Golie Chimbiya, has been arrested by police for allegedly murdering his 89-year-old grandmother, Anna Basiyo, on witchcraft accusations.

According to Neno Police Publicist Rebecca Msoliza, Chimbiya had been struggling with illness and visited herbalists and prophets who allegedly pointed to his grandmother as the cause of his suffering.

The situation took a deadly turn when Chimbiya killed a snake at his house and took it to a prophet in Mozambique, who reportedly told him the snake was sent by his grandmother and that he would die on December 18, 2025.

Upon his return from Mozambique on December 11, 2025, Chimbiya allegedly went to his grandmother’s house and attacked her with a panga knife, hacking her twice on the head, resulting in her death.

The incident has left the community in shock, highlighting concerns about the dangers of witchcraft accusations and the need for proper mental health support.

Chimbiya and his grandmother were from Moffati village, TA Dambe in Neno.

The police are continuing their investigation into the matter.
