Malawi President calls for rain prayers

Peter Mutharika

President Peter Mutharika has urged Malawians of all faiths to engage in prayer for favorable rainfall, as certain regions of the country are facing extended dry spells that jeopardize this year’s agricultural yield.

In a press release issued by his press secretary, Cathy Maulidi, Mutharika encouraged citizens to seek divine assistance to guarantee ongoing rainfall and ensure food security.

“He is appealing to all Malawians from diverse faith backgrounds to unite in prayer for the country to receive adequate rains for a fruitful harvest and to also pray for the cessation of the prolonged dry spells,” the statement reads.

The message is inspired by both the Bible and the Qur’an.It references 2 Chronicles 7:14, which implores individuals to “humble themselves, and pray… then will I hear from heaven… and will heal their land.”

It also mentions Surah Nuh, which states that God “will send rain from the sky upon you in continuing showers.”

Maulidi indicates that faith leaders are being invited to conduct special prayers from February 6 to 8, 2026.
