Lake Malawi water levels RISING!
The National Water Resources Authority (NWRA) has announced that it will be releasing over 1.4 million litres of water from Kamuzu Barrage to help mitigate the rising levels of Lake Malawi.
This decision comes in light of a consistent increase in the water levels of Lake Malawi, which have been steadily rising for the past 15 years.
As per a statement issued by the authority, the average lake level was recorded at 476.43 meters above sea level on 13 April, in contrast to 475.72 meters noted on the same date in 2025.
In a statement, Masozi Kasambala, the Public Relations Officer for the Authority, indicated that the rising water levels of Lake Malawi have impacted numerous livelihoods both upstream and downstream of the Kamuzu Barrage.
To address this issue, Kasambala mentioned that the authorities have commenced the release of 1.4 million litres of water per second at Kamuzu Barrage to assist in managing the lake’s swelling.
