MPs sent out from Malawi Parliament for wearing jeans
Today, Esther Jolobala, the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, expelled two Members of Parliament for breaching the dress code.
The expelled legislators were Edward Chileka Banda from Lilongwe Mapuyu South (Malawi Congress Party) and Morris Harrison Chikafa from Dedza Dzalanyama Constituency (Independent).
They were removed from the chamber after Susan Dossi, the legislator from Chikwawa West, raised a point of order questioning whether the House rules had been amended to permit members to wear jeans.
In reply, the Second Deputy Speaker directed the Sergeant-at-Arms to check the attire of the members.
Upon confirming that the two MPs were not in compliance with the Parliamentary dress code, they were instructed to exit the House.
Jolobala reminded all Members of Parliament to follow the established dress code as outlined in the Standing Orders of the House.
