HRDC breaks silence on legal issues
The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has dismissed claims circulating on social media suggesting that a recent High Court ruling removed its leadership from office, maintaining that the court upheld the status quo by rejecting an application for an injunction.
In a statement released on Monday, HRDC said the High Court in Lilongwe on July 23, 2026 dismissed an application filed by a group identifying itself as the HRDC Regional Ad Hoc Committee for Governance and Accountability.
The application sought to stop the current leadership from carrying out its duties.
Meanwhile,the coalition said that its current leadership remains legally in office and will continue executing its mandate.
It added that reports claiming the court ordered an immediate change in leadership or directed the organisation to convene an Annual General Meeting (AGM) within 30 days are inaccurate.
According to HRDC, Justice Howard Pemba, in his ruling, observed that there are gaps in the coalition’s Articles of Association and encouraged members to engage in discussions within 30 days on how those gaps can be addressed.
