Tobacco farmers remain under registration radar

The Tobacco Commission has announced that it will maintain its registration and licensing services for tobacco growers at its divisional offices following the conclusion of its nationwide field initiative.

According to the Commission’s Public Relations Officer, Telephorus Chigwenembe, growers who do not participate in the current exercise will have the opportunity to register at its offices located in Lilongwe, Kasungu, Mzuzu, and Limbe.

Chigwenembe explained that the Commission postponed the exercise deadline to October 3, 2026, due to the substantial number of participating growers, which necessitated additional staff, extended operating hours, and the establishment of supplementary registration facilities.

In related developments, Abel Kalima Banda, President of the Tobacco Association of Malawi, has commended the Commission’s management of the registration process, noting that these efforts will enhance farmer productivity and provide reliable data for determining fair tobacco market prices.

The initiative, which commenced on September 21, is designed to strengthen compliance standards and enhance traceability throughout Malawi’s tobacco sector.
