Former Malawi Police Inspector General Rodney Jose dies

Rodney Jose, the former Inspector General of the Malawi Police Service, has passed away.

Jose held the position of Inspector General between June 2018 and November 2019, following his appointment by President Peter Mutharika during his initial term in office.

His appointment generated considerable controversy due to allegations connected to the 2011 death of Robert Chasowa, a University of Malawi student.

Jose maintained his innocence regarding Chasowa’s death, a matter that garnered significant public scrutiny and prompted broader concerns about police accountability and institutional oversight.

Prior to assuming the nation’s highest police position, Jose held multiple executive roles throughout the Malawi Police Service.

His tenure occurred during a period when the organization faced mounting expectations to exhibit professional conduct and maintain neutrality when addressing matters of political sensitivity.
