Malawi’s inflation declines

The inflation rate in Malawi has dropped to 19.4 percent in September 2026, from 20 percent recorded in August.

According to the latest figures released by the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM), food inflation has also dropped to 12.5 percent from 13.4 percent in August, while non food inflation has eased to 31.5 percent from 31.8 percent during the same period.

On a month to month basis, inflation declined to 1.7 percent in September from 2 percent in August. Food inflation also slowed to 1.1 percent from 2.5 percent, indicating a slower increase in food prices.

However, month to month non food inflation rose to 2.5 percent from 1.2 percent in August, suggesting that price pressures persist in some sectors of the economy.

Despite the decline, prices remain higher than they were a year ago, although the latest figures indicate that the pace of price increases is slowing.
