‘Stop the Jane Ansah mess’-Kapito tells Mutharika

The Consumers Association of Malawi has issued a statement criticizing President Peter Mutharika for orchestrating a rift with the of Vice President Jane Ansah, cautioning that this internal conflict jeopardizes institutional leadership during an acute economic downturn.

In correspondence dated 27th October 2026, CAMA Executive Director John Kapito emphasized that the Vice Presidency constitutes a constitutional position under Section 79, representing an elected mandate rather than a presidential prerogative, and that both leaders were selected by Malawians as running mates.

CAMA referenced the removal of Ansah’s DoDMA and Public Sector Reforms responsibilities on 10th January 2026, her exclusion from prominent national occasions, and the August 2026 SADC Summit, where Second Vice President Enock Chihana participated in her stead despite her eligibility.

Kapito: We are worried.

Drawing parallels to previous instances involving Vice Presidents Justin Malewezi, Cassim Chilumpha, Joyce Banda, and Saulos Chilima, CAMA urged Mutharika to assign Ansah meaningful ministerial responsibilities, authorize her to preside over Cabinet proceedings during his unavailability, and publicly demonstrate their collaborative partnership.

The correspondence further appealed to the President’s historical record, contending that marginalizing Ansah violates constitutional principles, undermines female representation in leadership, and disrespects the electorate’s decision. The Office of the President and Cabinet has not yet issued a response.
