More than 5 thousand people die over Ebola in DRC

More than 5,000 people have died, while over 10,300 cases have been confirmed in the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).

According to government data, the outbreak, which started in May 2026, has spread to eight of the country’s 26 provinces, making it the deadliest Ebola outbreak in the country’s history and the second largest globally.

Ituri Province in northeastern DR Congo remains the epicentre, with conflict and attacks on health workers making it difficult to reach affected communities and contain the spread of the virus.

Cases have also been confirmed in Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda, raising concerns about further regional spread.

Meanwhile, testing, treatment and vaccine trials are underway, although there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment for the Bundibugyo strain responsible for the outbreak.

Ebola spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids such as blood and vomit.

Its symptoms include fever, vomiting and diarrhoea, while severe cases can lead to organ failure.
