Terrible: Number of Malawians admitted to mental hospital RISING!
Zomba Central Mental Hospital Director General Raphael Piringu has confirmed that an average of 18 patients are being admitted daily. Most cases stem from substance abuse. The facility discharges 15 patients daily, indicating successful recoveries.
The hospital currently has 460 patients, a significant increase from 2023. Piringu attributes this growth to heightened awareness of mental health importance.
The facility also cares for five babies whose mothers are admitted.
Piringu has also appealed for donations, particularly formula milk, to support these children.
Friends of Vision Welfare recently donated items worth K6.6 million to the hospital.
Board Chairperson Chayamba Nkhungudzu has since encouraged other well-wishers to support hospitals in need.
