Malawi in spirited action against India at FIFA Series today

Malawi Women’s National Team head coach Lovemore Fazili has stated that the Scorchers are completely ready for the third-place playoff against India this afternoon at the FIFA Series in Kenya.

The Scorchers aim to conclude the tournament positively after experiencing a significant loss to Australia in the semifinal, while India also faced elimination at the same stage against the hosts, Kenya, leading to a bronze medal match between the two teams.

Fazili mentioned that the technical panel has evaluated both their own weaknesses and India’s strengths in preparation for the upcoming match.

“We are training effectively for the game against India. Any issues from our initial match against Australia have been addressed, and the players recognize the significance of this game. We are expected to secure a victory, and everyone is prepared,” he stated.

The coach characterized India as a well-disciplined and organized team.

“Tactically and technically, India operates as a cohesive unit. They employed a 4-4-2 formation, pressing as a collective. We have been training with this information in mind, and whatever strategy we implement will be a constructive one,” he explained.

Fazili also noted that adjustments will be made to both the formation and the starting lineup.

“We will not only modify the formation but also alter the lineup. The players were not underperforming in the first match, although some had difficulties. Now everyone is more settled, and we anticipate that each player will give her utmost effort,” he added.

The coach suggested a potential change in goalkeeping, with Esther Maulidi being considered after a strong performance off the bench.

“We need to consider changing the goalkeeper. Esther came on after we substituted Mercy, and I believe she performed well. She provided what we were seeking and deserves another opportunity,” Fazili remarked.

The FIFA Series is part of Malawi’s preparations for the forthcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which also acts as a pathway to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Fazili remains hopeful about the team’s development, particularly with the anticipated return of key players.
