Chakwera lawyers alert on ‘purported arrest’
Lawyer George Jivason Kadzipatike has reported that the Malawi Police Service intends to arrest former President Lazarus Chakwera.
He states that this alleged arrest is connected to the walk he undertook from the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) headquarters to lay a wreath at Kamuzu’s mausoleum in Lilongwe.
“If these reports are accurate, it is quite unfortunate, given that the wreath-laying ceremony was properly authorized by the appropriate Government official.”With that authorization, Dr. Chakwera had the right to access the mausoleum using any form of transportation. The police instigated actions against innocent, peaceful, unarmed, and law-abiding citizens who participated in that solemn procession on May 14, 2026,” Kadzipatike is qouted by the Nation Publications Limited.
The lawyer, who also serves as the legal director for MCP, has urged the Malawi Police Service to refrain from further “provoking” Chakwera’s supporters.
“The intention to arrest the former President under the pretext that he was attending a duly authorized event is not only absurd but also reflects a lack of seriousness on the part of the police,” he adds.
The police have not yet provided a response regarding this issue.
