Prison mongers arrested for theft
Police in Mchinji have arrested two former prisoners believed to be responsible for a string of robberies and homicides at various trading centers within the district over the last month.
Mchinji Police spokesperson Limbani Mpinganjira reported that Emmanuel Fatsani Phiri, 37, and Patrick Kapomba, 35, were taken into custody in Lilongwe as a result of a collaborative operation involving detectives from both districts.
As per Mpinganjira, the suspects, along with accomplices who remain at large, are accused of attacking a security guard at Kalulu Admarc and stealing a Mark 2 rifle that was loaded with ammunition before assaulting traders.
The duo is also charged with attacking a Burundian national and robbing him of K15 million and mobile phones.
Mpinganjira added that the two, who were released from Maula Prison in January of the previous year, are suspected of having murdered a trader at Chipumi Trading Centre, who subsequently succumbed to his injuries at Kamuzu Central Hospital.
Additionally, four other traders were reportedly injured during these assaults, with the suspects allegedly stealing K2.6 million and mobile phones.
