Tanzanians arrested in Malawi over 1 Billion Kwacha possession

Police in Rumphi have arrested two Tanzanian nationals after allegedly finding them with more than US$1.1 million (Over 1 Billion Malawi Kwacha) in cash hidden in their vehicle during a roadblock operation.

The suspects, identified as Paschal Nyanda aged 28, and Sanda Donald, 24, were arrested on July 1, 2026, at around 2:30 p.m. during a special police operation at the Chiweta roadblock.

Meanwhile the Police said the suspect were travelling from Lilongwe to Tanzania in a Mazda Axela, registration number NE 11400.

During the search, police allegedly recovered US$1,141,215 hidden inside the vehicle. The suspects reportedly failed to produce any documentation authorising possession or transportation of the foreign currency.

Additionally, Police have since seized both the cash and the vehicle as investigations continue.

The two suspects are expected to appear before court once the necessary paperwork is completed to answer charges of being found in possession of foreign currency without supporting documentation and money laundering.
