‘Increasing fees in universities is carelessness’-Kabambe

UTM President Dalitso Kabambe has labeled the 100% increase in school fees for public universities, raising them from K650,000 to K1.3 million annually, as an unfair policy that should be overturned.

Speaking to the media in Lilongwe, Kabambe stated that this decision creates an educational barrier for public university students, who are now faced with the burden of approximately K3.8 million per academic year when considering accommodation, food, and other expenses.

Kabambe suggested that the government should reduce certain budget allocations, including the K80 billion designated for the State House, which could help cover the alleged funding shortfall in public universities and facilitate the reversal of this decision.

The UTM leader emphasized that the government must recognize that education is not merely a consumable good, asserting that investing in education is essential for achieving human capital development in accordance with the Malawi 2063 blueprint.
