Prison authorities place sights on financial stability

The Malawi Prison Service in the Northern Region has outlined key priorities for the current financial year, with a strong focus on financial accountability, rehabilitation programmes and improved operational efficiency.

The resolutions were made during the Annual Management Meeting held at Chisanga Conference Lodge in Mzuzu.

Opening the meeting, Northern Regional Commanding Officer Alex Makunganya said effective management of resources and teamwork among prison stations would be essential to improving service delivery.

He urged officers to work together in addressing challenges affecting the region.

Makunganya also commended Chitipa, Nkhata Bay, Karonga and Mzimba prisons for their contributions to government revenue through income-generating rehabilitation projects.

He further praised Mzuzu Prison for leading restorative justice and peace-building initiatives aimed at helping inmates successfully reintegrate into society.

Meanwhile, the meeting also reviewed the 2025/26 farming season, with prison stations encouraged to improve agricultural production ahead of the next season.

Makunganya advised officers to prepare for the expected moderate rainfall linked to El Niño by adopting appropriate farming practices and making efficient use of available resources.

The annual meeting brought together Officers-in-Charge and Station Officers from prisons across the Northern Region, who pledged to implement the agreed strategies to strengthen prison operations and enhance rehabilitation programmes for inmates.
