Death from road accidents drop in Malawi
The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has recorded a significant drop in road traffic accidents and deaths during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025.
According to the Malawi Police Service (MPS) 406 people died in road crashes between January and June 2026, down from 464 recorded during the same period last year.
Fatal road accidents also dropped by 15 percent, decreasing from 411 cases to 351.The report further indicates that overall road traffic accidents declined by 6 percent, from 1,894 cases in the first half of 2025 to 1,784 this year.
However, the Central West and South West police regions continued to record the highest number of crashes, accounting for 68 percent of all reported accidents nationwide.
Despite the improvement, the police say men remain the most affected, making up 78 percent of all road crash casualties and 84 percent of fatalities.
People aged between 25 and 44 years were identified as the age group most affected by road accidents.
Pedestrians remain the most vulnerable road users, accounting for 43 percent of all casualties, followed by passengers, motorcyclists, pedal cyclists and drivers.
Meanwhile ,MPS says that excessive speed continues to be the leading cause of crashes, prompting the Service to urge motorists and other road users to obey traffic laws as it intensifies enforcement measures and works with stakeholders to further improve road safety.
