Final Day: Malawi takes on Cameroon with a scintillating goalkeeper
Malawi’s dream of winning their maiden Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title faces a formidable obstacle today as the Scorchers take on Cameroon, whose goalkeeper Michaely Bihina has emerged as one of the tournament’s standout performers.
Born in 2003, the 22-year-old Bihina, who plays for Portuguese giants Benfica, has kept three clean sheets in five matches, playing a key role in guiding the Indomitable Lionesses into the final.
Bihina showed her quality in the semi-final against Morocco, saving four penalties, one in extra time and three in the shootout, to help Cameroon reach the final.
Her performance has made her one of the goalkeepers to watch in the tournament.But today, Bihina will face a strong Malawi attack led by sisters Temwa and Tabitha Chawinga.
Malawi have scored 12 goals in the tournament, with Temwa scoring five and Tabitha four, making the sisters a major threat to Cameroon.
Meanwhile, Cameroon have lost their three previous WAFCON finals, in 2004, 2014 and 2016, all against Nigeria, while Malawi are playing in their first final.
