Chatama takes the entire village to Junior Flames
The Junior Flames team has left football enthusiasts in Malawi questioning the rationale behind Coach Enos Chatama’s player selections for the COSAFA Under-20 qualifiers.
Ekhaya FC has contributed 14 players to the provisional squad of 32, while FCB Nyasa Big Bullets has provided seven. In contrast, the entire Northern Region is represented by only one player, leading to allegations of a selection process that seems disproportionately favorable to a select few clubs.
The discontent has intensified, particularly since Chatama also serves as the head coach for Ekhaya’s senior team.
The goalkeeping position has drawn significant scrutiny, as all three selected goalkeepers are from Ekhaya.
“Are all the goalkeepers from Ekhaya really that exceptional? Is one from the main team, one from the reserve, and one from the U19?” Ken Alufisha Chinangwa inquired on FAM’s Facebook page.
However, the criticism extends beyond mere social media exchanges.
The general secretary of Chitipa United has called upon the selectors to clarify how it is possible for 14 players from a single club to be included in the squad while the Northern Region, which hosts numerous teams in national leagues, has only one representative.
“I question the logic behind this selection, considering that seventeen players, including all three goalkeepers, come from one club, while only one player has been selected from the entire Northern Region,” he stated.
He raised concerns about whether the selectors thoroughly evaluated the talent present in the region, which includes players from the Chiwemi Investment League, FCB Under-20 League, NBS National League, and FDH Premiership.
The official warned that such exclusions could demoralize young athletes who dedicate time and effort to the sport but feel that their strong performances may not be sufficient for national acknowledgment.
While the selection itself does not inherently indicate favoritism or misconduct, the inclusion of 14 players from a single club, including all three goalkeepers, raises significant questions.
