Mulanje Mountain struck by worrisome tree cutting

Recent reports indicate that Mulanje Mountain is experiencing significant tree cutting activities.

Minister of Natural Resources, Patricia Wiskes, has stated that the ongoing degradation of forest reserves on Mount Mulanje presents a grave threat to both human life and the mountain’s biodiversity.

After a closed-door meeting and a visit to the Namchidwa Forestry Office and Forest Reserve yesterday, Wiskes expressed concern over a small group of individuals who are engaging in tree cutting and charcoal production, actions that violate forestry regulations.

Wiskes: We have to do more.

She mentioned that her ministry plans to collaborate with traditional leaders and local communities to collectively address this issue.

In the meantime, District Commissioner Chriss Nawata announced that his office will convene with all stakeholders to investigate how trees and charcoal are being transported out of the district. He noted that they have temporarily halted the issuance of transportation permits.

The Namchidwa Forest, which the Minister inspected, spans 2,000 hectares, yet only approximately 300 hectares are currently forested.
