Total darkness: Malawi hit by national power blackout

A massive nationwide power outage plunged Malawi into darkness late Wednesday night following a sudden system shutdown, leaving homes, businesses, and essential services across the country without electricity.

The blackout began at approximately 10:45 PM on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) confirmed the widespread failure in an official public statement released more than two hours after the grid collapsed.

According to the state-run power utility, the blanket outage was triggered by a total system shutdown. However, the exact cause of the abrupt grid failure remains unknown.

“Our technical team is on the ground to establish the cause of the system shutdown,” ESCOM stated in its public notice. “We will inform the nation once all facts have been established.”

The unexpected loss of power has aggravated frustrations among citizens and local businesses, coming amid a period of ongoing electricity supply challenges and generation shortfalls in the country. Grid failures and system instability have occasionally disrupted the national network in recent months, forcing commercial sectors to rely heavily on costly backup generators.

ESCOM expressed regret over the sudden disruption and apologized to its customers across the Southern, Central, and Northern regions for the severe inconvenience caused by the interruption.
