Norway sealing operations in Malawi

The Government of Norway has announced its plan to close the embassy in Malawi by the end of July 2027.

This decision comes after the embassy was established in Lilongwe in 2000.

In recent years, Norway has allocated an average of NOK 500 million each year in development aid to Malawi, concentrating on vital sectors such as health, education, agriculture, and good governance.

In a statement on their website, Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide referred to the current global security landscape.”We are encountering the most significant security policy challenges since World War II. In a world characterized by growing uncertainty and swift changes, we must adapt the Foreign Service to safeguard Norwegian interests as effectively as possible.

“The decision to close an embassy is always a difficult one, but I must continually assess how we can optimize our resources,” Eide stated.

Simultaneously, Minister of International Development Åsmund Aukrust reassured that Norway’s support for the people of Malawi will continue despite the embassy’s closure.

“Norway will persist in supporting the development of the Malawian people even after the embassy is closed,” Aukrust affirmed.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has indicated that it will soon announce which embassies will take over the responsibility for managing Norway’s diplomatic relations with Malawi and Zambia.
