Daredevil: Man in trouble for attacking a police officer
The Thyolo Second Grade Magistrate Court has imposed a fine of K325,000 on 27-year-old Manuel Malata, or alternatively, a 24-month prison sentence for the assault of a police officer.
During the proceedings, State Prosecutor Ishmael Abubasit presented evidence that Malata attacked Officer Siliyo Kalizambeta at a bar in Thyolo boma on September 5, 2026, following an encounter between the two.
Malata admitted his guilt and requested leniency, explaining to the court that he is a family man and assuring that he would not commit the same offense again.
However, the state urged the court to dismiss his plea for leniency, highlighting that Malata had previously committed a similar offense in 2024 and, as a prominent individual who serves public figures in the district, he should have exemplified better behavior.
Magistrate Thomson Sikweya concurred with the state’s position and handed down the sentence.
Malata, who hails from Mzuwa village in the area of Senior Chief Nchilamwera, has already settled the fine.
