4 journalists freed after over minister’s missing glasses

Four Cameroonian journalists have been released after spending five days in detention over allegations that they stole eyeglasses belonging to Economy Minister Alamine Ousmane Mey.

The journalists were arrested after being accused of taking the minister’s eyeglasses during an event.

However, reports later indicated that the missing eyeglasses were found inside the minister’s vehicle.

The arrests drew criticism from journalists’ unions and media rights groups, who described the detention as an attack on press freedom and called for an official apology.

The groups also questioned why the four journalists were targeted when hundreds of people attended the same event.

Meanwhile, the journalists were released on September 21 without any charges being announced.
