Lilongwe launches crackdown on sand mining
The Lilongwe City Council says it will take action against illegal sand miners and brick moulders, blaming the two activities for worsening environmental degradation in the city.
Public Relations Officer Tamara Chafunya said the council is particularly concerned as the rainy season draws near, when illegal sand mining usually intensifies.
She called on residents to report perpetrators, warning that those caught will be penalised in line with the council’s by-laws.El
Environmental activist Godfrey Mfiti has supported the council’s stance, but said the bans will only make a difference if they are strictly enforced.
