Mzuzu man arrested over ivory

Police in Mzuzu have arrested a 34-year-old man, Gift Chimaliro, for allegedly being found in possession of four pieces of ivory.

Northern Region Police spokesperson Cecilia Mfune said Chimaliro was arrested at Nkholongo in the city following a tip-off that he was offering the ivory for sale.

Mfune said the four pieces, weighing about 24 kilograms, were being offered at K1,800,000.

Police have since seized the raw elephant ivory, which has been sent for morphological analysis.

The suspect is expected to appear in court once paperwork is completed.
