Govt commits to taming teachers woes

The government, through the Ministry of Education, says it will address various challenges facing teachers, including low salaries and heavy workloads in classrooms.

Minister of Education Bright Msaka said this on Monday during a press briefing in Lilongwe.

Msaka said that out of 11,000 people who applied for secondary school teaching positions this year, the government will recruit 1,100 teachers due to financial challenges.

He stressed that teachers are a pillar of national development and said the government will ensure that they are adequately supported.

Meanwhile, Malawi is today, October 5, joining the rest of the world in commemorating World Teachers’ Day under the theme, “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures.”
