Malawi’s debt worsens

Recent reports indicate that Malawi’s debt has surpassed 24 trillion Malawi Kwacha, raising significant concerns among stakeholders.

Now, the National Debt Coalition has demanded greater transparency and accountability regarding the nation’s debt.

Coalition spokesperson Precious Mafunga contends that the accumulated debt has failed to generate meaningful economic growth for Malawi and criticizes the government’s insufficient disclosure of loan conditions and terms at the time of borrowing, characterizing the circumstances as a critical situation.

Mafunga has acknowledged President Peter Mutharika’s recognition of Malawi’s substantial debt burden and the necessity for debt restructuring, yet emphasizes that the country must prioritize borrowing exclusively for developmental initiatives rather than consumption expenditures.

During an exclusive interview with the national broadcaster MBC on Sunday, Mutharika explained that Malawi lacks adequate domestic resources to fund all development initiatives and governmental operations, necessitating reliance on both internal and international borrowing mechanisms.

The debt composition comprises over K16 trillion in domestic obligations, with the remaining balance constituting external liabilities.
