PREVIEW: Scorchers await Zimbabwe today

The Malawi senior women’s national football team, the Scorchers, will today make their first home appearance since their historic silver-medal triumph at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) when they host Zimbabwe’s Mighty Warriors at the Bingu National Stadium.

The highly anticipated clash, scheduled for 3:00 PM CAT, is the first-leg encounter of the second round of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games Qualifiers.

For head coach Lovemore Fazili and his squad, the fixture is not just a quest for an Olympic ticket, but a mission for redemption. Despite their stellar continental run in Morocco earlier this year, the Scorchers carry a painful scar from their last meeting with their regional rivals. On November 28, 2025, Zimbabwe stunned Malawi with a 2-1 victory on this very same pitch during a Tri-Nations friendly tournament.

Speaking ahead of the match, Fazili emphasized that playing in front of a passionate home crowd for the first time since making history provides the ultimate motivation. “The fans have been waiting to celebrate these girls, and the best way to thank them is by securing a convincing win today before we travel to Harare,” he said.

Temwa Chawinga leads the line.

Malawi will lean heavily on their fearsome, world-class attacking trio. African football icon and captain Tabitha Chawinga leads the line alongside her prolific sister Temwa Chawinga and the explosive Asimenye Simwaka.

The Scorchers have also been boosted by the return of veteran defender Patricia Nyirenda, who is back in the squad after a lengthy injury layoff. Additionally, France-based rising star Rose Kabzere has joined the camp to inject creativity into the midfield.

However, the hosts will have to navigate the first leg without influential attacking midfielder Faith Chimzimu, who has been ruled out due to a late injury knock. Team doctors are working around the clock to get her ready for the return leg in Zimbabwe on Tuesday, October 13.

Zimbabwe arrives in Lilongwe with no fear, drawing confidence from their psychological edge over the hosts. The Mighty Warriors’ technical panel has indicated they have a structural blueprint to neutralize Malawi’s lethal Chawinga-led frontline.

With both sides boasting explosive talent and regional pride on the line, the Bingu National Stadium is expected to be a pressure cooker this afternoon.

The aggregate winner over the two legs will advance to the next phase of the road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
