Rains to distort fishing activities in Lake Malawi

Nkhata Bay District is expected to experience normal to above normal rainfall during the 2026/2027 rainy season, raising fears of flooding in low lying areas and strong winds that could disrupt fishing and transport on Lake Malawi.

District Meteorology Officer Amosi Chimbwila said this during the dissemination of the district’s seasonal rainfall forecast, warning that thunderstorms and gusty winds could accompany the rains.

He identified areas around Chintheche and along the Luweya River as prone to flooding, urging residents to take precautions.

Meanwhile, Principal Agriculture Officer Gerald Nkhwekwe has advised farmers to wait for effective planting rains expected in the third or fourth week of November before planting their crops.

“We are advising farmers that if rains come before the third or fourth week of November, they should not plant, “he said.

He added that the rainy season, which is expected to run from October 2026 to April 2027, would last between 140 and 150 days.

Nkhwekwe has also encouraged farmers to grow medium and late maturing crop varieties and conserve soil moisture to withstand possible dry spells in January and February.
