‘Malawi’s fuel crisis to end next week’
Energy Minister Jean Mathanga has said that 23. 6 million litres of motor fuel purchased by the government are on their way and it is hoped that when they arrive in the country they will alleviate the fuel shortage from next week.
Mathanga said the government is aware that the fuel shortage, which is due to a lack of foreign exchange, has affected Malawians in various sectors, as well as essential government services.
“While we acknowledge that the crisis has affected Malawians and government services, I want to assure you that this crisis is now a thing of the past. We have purchased 23.6 million litres of fuel, of which 11.6 million are on the way while the rest have already started reaching filling stations,” Mathanga said.
He said that in Mzuzu the fuel has reached various areas, while in Lilongwe diesel has been distributed and there is hope that petrol will reach most filling stations by the end of tomorrow, while in Blantyre it has been delayed.
But the head of the Consumers Association of Malawi (CAMA), John Kapito, says Malawians will be disappointed when this fuel becomes available in the country on a regular basis.
