Advocates want crackdown on Anti Corruption Czar

The National Anti-Corruption Alliance (NACA) has urged authorities to initiate a multi-agency investigation into claims that Acting Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Gabriel Chembezi, attempted to sway the results of parliamentary inquiries regarding the sale of the Amaryllis hotel.

NACA Chairperson, Michael Kaiyatsa, stated that the allegations made by the Chairperson of the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Steve Malondera, in a letter to the ACB are serious and raise significant governance issues related to corruption.

Malondera confirmed that he has reached out to the anti-corruption agency on this matter, also informing President Peter Mutharika and the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, among others.

In his correspondence to the ACB, Malondera claims he has faced threats and victimization from Chembezi after he declined to comply with a request to alter PAC findings concerning the Amaryllis hotel sale.

Meanwhile, the parliamentary investigation into the Amaryllis hotel sale resumed yesterday with the testimony of former Reserve Bank of Malawi Governor, Dr. Macdonald Mafuta Mwale.
