Court rings orders on Eastbridge case
The High Court’s financial crimes division in Lilongwe has instructed East Bridge’s lawyers to submit new sworn statements regarding the company’s request to lift the restriction orders imposed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) against it.
In an interview following today’s court proceedings in Judge Redson Kapindu’s chambers, the company’s attorney, Chimwemwe Kalua, stated that Kapindu has ruled that the company cannot utilize the sworn statements previously submitted by other attorneys due to errors present in those documents.
“The application needed to be backed by affidavits or sworn statements, but before I could present it, I identified some issues with those documents. Therefore, I requested the court’s permission to use them in their flawed state. The court has ruled that we cannot proceed with those defective sworn statements but has allowed us to file new ones to correct the identified issues,” he explained.Additionally, Kapindu has postponed the proceedings until April 29, 2026.Earlier this January, the ACB issued restrictive orders to the company as part of its criminal investigation, which was initiated following a complaint from the ministry of agriculture. These orders prevent the company from shipping or managing its assets without the consent of the bureau’s director general.
