Malawi taking back its 600 citizens from South Africa

Malawi is taking strong measures to safeguard its citizens by bringing back 600 of its nationals from South Africa in response to a surge of xenophobic violence aimed at foreigners, including Malawians.

Foreign Affairs Minister George Chaponda has voiced his concerns and has met with South Africa’s High Commissioner to Malawi, Mavivi Myakayaka-Manzini, to discuss the situation.

Chaponda: We are supporting our people.

Chaponda expressed that he is “disheartened” by the suffering experienced by Malawians in Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Johannesburg.

The South African government has sent police to the affected regions and is committed to ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.

Malawi is repatriating its citizens, and Chaponda is advocating for their protection and assistance.
