Stinking: Dirt, ordour all over Illala Ship
The health of individuals aboard the MV Illala ship is jeopardized due to the absence of a sewage system, which leads to the direct release of human waste (feces and urine) into the water.
Moreover, passengers are prohibited from using the toilets when the vessel is docked.
Chikondi Chimala, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, states that this aligns with the vessel’s design from 75 years ago when it was constructed.
Nevertheless, Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene expert Willes Mwandira has labeled this situation as detrimental to hygiene, identifying it as a contributing factor to cholera outbreaks in lakeshore regions.
