Young boy dies after soil pile fell on him

A 12-year-old boy named Watson Matolabasi has died after a mound of soil fell on him while he was playing in an abandoned mine in Nsanje district.

This took place at an illegal mining site located in Nyuwani village, under the jurisdiction of Traditional Authority Mbenje in Nsanje district.‎

Jabulani Ng’oma, the spokesperson for Nsanje Police, reported that the accident occurred when the victim was playing with his friends in a pit that had been left by illegal miners.

Ng’oma stated that although people were able to pull him from the pit, he had already succumbed to his injuries by the time he was rescued.‎

A medical examination confirmed his death, determining that suffocation was the cause.
