Beer kills two students in Mzuzu
Police in Mzuzu city have confirmed the deaths of two students in separate incidents linked to excessive alcohol consumption without food.
Northern Region Police spokesperson Cecilia Mfune identified the deceased as Lwitiko Kanjere, 22, a first-year nursing student at St. John’s Institute of Health Sciences from Karonga, and Kelvin Wakhama, 21, a learner at Zolozolo Secondary School from Mzimba District.
Mfune said Kanjere was found unconscious along the road near Lunyangwa Bridge on Sunday morning after spending the night drinking with friends.
Wakhama was found unconscious in his bedroom in Zolozolo by family members after returning from farm work.Both were rushed to Mzuzu Central Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
According to the postmortem results, the cause of death in both cases was hypoglycaemia resulting from excessive alcohol intake on empty stomachs.
Police say no foul play is suspected in either incident.
